BARRE IN SOUTHWARK

BARRE CLASSES IN SOUTHWARK, NEAR LONDON BRIDGE & WATERLOO
Barre is a full-body, low-impact workout inspired by ballet, Pilates, and functional fitness. It targets muscles you never knew you had, sculpts and tones without bulk, and leaves you feeling taller, stronger, and more graceful — even after your very first class.
At The London Academy of Dance, we run small-group Barre classes on Copperfield Street in Southwark, SE1. Our studio is a short walk from London Bridge, Borough, Southwark, and Waterloo stations. No dance experience required. No membership needed. Just come and move.
What is Barre
Barre is a dynamic workout that uses the support of a ballet barre to guide you through small, controlled movements, isometric holds, and high repetitions. It draws on ballet technique, Pilates principles, and functional strength training to sculpt and define your muscles from head to toe.
The movements are small but mighty. You will pulse, squeeze, hold, and shake — and that shake is the sign that something wonderful is happening. Barre targets the stabiliser muscles between the big ones, building the kind of lean, defined strength that changes how your body looks and how it feels.
You don't need dance experience. You don't need to be flexible. Classes are accessible to all levels, with modifications and progressions offered throughout.
What to Expect from Every Class
-
A full-body workout in 45 minutes — legs, glutes, arms, core, and posture
-
Small, precise movements that create real, visible tone without bulk
-
Better posture from the very first week — you will stand taller and carry yourself differently
-
A calm, focused atmosphere with music that matches the mood
-
Gentle corrections from your instructor so every movement counts
-
That famous muscle shake — it means it's working
Every exercise has a modification. You set the pace. Your instructor is there to guide you, not push you.
Who is Barre for?
Our Barre classes attract a wonderful mix of people — but if any of these sound like you, you will feel right at home:
-
The person who wants to tone without bulk. You want visible results — firmer legs, a lifted seat, defined arms — but you don't want to look like you've been lifting heavy in a gym. Barre uses high repetitions of small movements that target lean muscle fibres. The result is a body that looks sculpted and graceful, not bulky.
-
The morning routine lover. You work near London Bridge, Borough, or Waterloo, and you like starting your day with something that sets you up properly. Our Friday 7:30 AM class is 45 minutes of focused, precise movement. You walk out at 8:15 feeling taller, calmer, and ready for anything — with your weekend workout already done.
-
The yoga or Pilates fan who wants something new. You enjoy mindful movement but want to add something with a bit more muscle challenge. Barre complements Pilates beautifully — the core stability from Pilates makes your Barre work more effective, and the endurance from Barre makes your Pilates stronger.
-
The curious beginner. You have seen Barre mentioned everywhere and you are curious, but you are not sure if you will keep up. Every single person in the room started exactly where you are. The movements are guided step by step, and nobody in the room is watching anyone else. They are too busy concentrating on their own muscles shaking.

Barre Classes – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Barre?
Barre is a full-body, low-impact workout inspired by ballet, Pilates, and functional fitness. It uses a ballet barre for support while you perform small, controlled movements, isometric holds, and high repetitions. The result is improved posture, lean muscle tone, and a stronger, more graceful body.
Do I need dance experience for Barre?
Not at all. Barre borrows technique from ballet — the positions, the precision — but it is not a dance class. There is no choreography to learn. Your instructor guides you through every movement, and every exercise has modifications for different levels.
Is Barre suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Our classes welcome all levels. Every exercise has a modification, and our instructor checks in with newcomers before class. Most people are surprised by how quickly they get into the rhythm.
Will Barre make me bulky?
No. Barre works through high repetitions of small movements, which targets lean muscle fibres. The result is a toned, defined look — long, sculpted muscles rather than visible bulk. The ballet influence is part of why: ballet training creates strength without size.
How quickly will I see results from Barre?
Most people notice postural changes within two to three classes — you will stand taller and feel longer. Visible muscle tone typically appears after three to four weeks of attending once or twice a week. The mental benefits — clarity, calm, feeling lighter — often show up from the very first class.
How is Barre different from Pilates?
Pilates focuses on deep core strength, spinal alignment, and controlled movement — often performed lying on a mat. Barre is performed standing, using a ballet barre for balance, and targets the legs, glutes, and postural muscles through small, repetitive movements. They complement each other beautifully.
Is Barre low impact?
Yes. There is no jumping, no high-impact cardio. Barre is gentle on your joints while being genuinely challenging for your muscles. It is suitable for people with joint concerns, and modifications are always available.
What should I wear to a Barre class?
Wear leggings or stretchy trousers and a fitted top so your instructor can see your alignment. Grippy socks are ideal, but bare feet work too. We provide mats and all equipment — just bring water.
How big are the classes?
We keep our Barre classes intentionally small. This means your instructor can watch your form, offer personal corrections, and create a more supportive experience than a large gym class.
Where are you located?
We are based on Copperfield Street in Southwark, SE1 — a short walk from Borough, London Bridge, Southwark, and Waterloo stations.
How do I book a Barre class?
Book directly online via our timetable. No phone calls needed. You can pay for a single class, a class pack, or a membership.
What is your cancellation policy?
Classes can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the start time. No refunds are offered for missed or late-cancelled classes.
