Barre Classes – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Barre?

Barre is a low-impact, full-body workout inspired by ballet, Pilates, and functional strength training. It focuses on small, controlled movements to build strength, improve posture, enhance flexibility, and tone the body — particularly the core, glutes, legs, and arms.

Is Barre suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Barre classes are suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. Every exercise is taught with clear guidance and options, so you can work at your own pace while building strength safely and effectively.

Do I need dance experience?

No dance experience is required. While Barre is inspired by ballet, it is a fitness class — not a dance class. All movements are accessible and designed for everyone, regardless of background.

How is Barre different from Pilates?

Both Barre and Pilates focus on control, core strength, and alignment. Barre incorporates more standing work, isometric holds, and small pulses, often using a ballet barre or wall support. Pilates places more emphasis on mat-based work and spinal mobility. Many people enjoy combining both for a balanced routine.

Is Barre low impact?

Yes. Barre is low impact and joint-friendly, making it suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. It’s an excellent option if you want to build strength and tone without high-impact movements.

Who is Barre best for?

Barre is ideal for:

  • Beginners looking for a structured, supportive workout

  • Anyone wanting to tone and strengthen without high impact

  • Dancers and non-dancers alike

  • People improving posture, balance, and core strength

  • Those who enjoy controlled, mindful movement with a burn

How often should I do Barre?

For best results, we recommend 2–3 Barre classes per week. One class per week will still bring benefits, but consistency is key for building strength and seeing progress.

Do I need to bring my own mat or equipment?

No — mats are provided, and we also have small equipment available in the studio (such as light weights, resistance bands, or balls). You’re welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer.

What should I wear to a Barre class?

Wear comfortable activewear that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are recommended but optional.

Please bring water to stay hydrated.

How big are the classes?

We keep class sizes manageable to ensure personal attention, proper technique guidance, and a comfortable studio experience for everyone.

Where are you located?

We’re based in Southwark, SE1, within easy walking distance of Borough, London Bridge, Southwark, and Waterloo stations. Full directions can be found on our contact page.

How do I book a Barre class?

You can book directly online via our timetable. If you have a membership or class pack, simply select your class and check out.

What is your rescheduling / cancellation policy?

Classes can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the start time.
Please note that no refunds are offered for missed or late-cancelled classes.
